chocolatah-tay
i couldn't sleep sunday night so i decided to prep the veg for the next day. what happens when i do that is that i just keep going and cook the damn thing. and when that happens, i always discover that i'm missing ingredients, namely the kidney and butter beans. um, kind of essential to have beans in a bean chili, n'est ce pas? heh. i kept going though.
here are the carrots, celery, onions and lotsa garlic being softened:
and then the steamy goodness. i added chili powder because i didn't have any chili peppers lying around, and one orange bell pepper and one yella bell pepper, two potatoes and a can of chick peas! also of note was the two squares of dark (70% cocoa), chocolate. i used a chocolate bar and it was super thin so i added two more squares:
cooked it until the potatoes were tender and took a few bites; it was surprisingly very very chocolatey for what little chocolate i'd put in. oh right, i forgot to mention that i didn't have any tomato paste either.
seeing as how i was missing myriad ingredients, i thought i'd pop over to the store the next day and pick them up. three days later, i decided that i was too lazy so i dumped it all back into a new pot:
and dumped a can of diced tomatoes in.
ta da:
it tastes much better with tomatoes and extra chili powder.
(i fixed yer text more, gwern. brenda was right. the html was fiddly. love, mishka)

Looks really yummy gwern! Love the tomatoes... Canned tomatoes are SO great in chili. :O)
(Not sure if mishka already did this, and the page just hasn't updated, but if you send me the html for the post, I can try to edit out the extra space and fix the text issue. Sometimes it just does that, and I've found the only way to really fix it is by messing with the html. It's really frustrating, I know!!! :O/)
i originally just fixed the hotlinked text and kept the formatting. you're right - the html needed tweaking. all tweaked now! hope gwern doesn't feel violated ;)
I've never actually made chili *without* canned tomatoes - but isn't that how it's traditonally made? Just meat and beans? Has anyone tried a non-tomato chili with beans/TVP and spices? I'm intrigued :)
thank you mishka!!! :D i was so frustrated that i left the computer for half a day. hee.
i've never had chili without tomatoes - either homemade or someone else's recipe. much betterer i say. ;)
it's thursday night, time to be thinking about tomorrow's recipe!
this is getting hard! I love the idea of stews or curries - something for dinner, y'know. Stuff that freezes well for leftovers :D How's everyone else feeling? What are you favourite types of recipes?
i'm going to be making a veganized version of ina garten's (barefoot contessa), chicken stew with biscuits, this weekend for a family get together.
there is a recipe online. (just replace the chicken with tofu or seitan and the cream with almond milk, yada yada) the omni recipe is here (scroll down a bit): http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/recipex/msg011951441747.html?12
it needs veganizing. i don't know that y'all would approve. i veganized it last year and it turned out really well.
or what about french onion soup? there are a bunch of recipes here: http://www.theveggietable.com/recipes/veganrecipes.html
for various stews/soups/stroganoffs/curries etc. if anyone wants to pick something.
i'm definitely in the mood for "easy" and "leftovers". :)
oooo yes French onion soup! But stew and biscuits are good too.
French Onion Soup sounds really good... I have not yet tried a veganized recipe!
gwern, i'm glad someone fixed you up! i went to edit it, and then i felt uncomfortable, and then didn't do it so i'm glad it's done!
mmm, i've definitely been thinking dinner as opposed to dessert or snack. and leftovers are always the goal so i think we're all thinking the same thoughts!
i'd totally love to try that "chicken" and biscuits recipe one day, though i think for here, we might want to stick (at least for now) with highlighting already veganized recipes, no?
i've never had a vegan french onion soup. part of me is totally into it and part of me is "oy! onions!" but i don't have any suggestions and i'm willing to try most anything...
???
I wonder if it's ok to veganize a recipe and then repost it? Does that make it ok? I'm too tired to do that, but that might make it easier for us to make either of those recipes. Thoughts? I'm in the mood for some comforting food!
hmmmmm
not even stagflation here on the weekend? ok...i'm going away on wednesday (my sister had a baby!), so if i'm going to make something, it's gotta be today or tomorrow.
i tried to look up gwern's chicken and bisuits link and it said it wasn't available ???) did you write out a veganized version when you did it last year or was it by eye? i'm realizing i'm probably in the minority of people who rarely veganizes recipes on her own. i was looking through my friend sara's recipe book, and there were tons of meaty things in there, and i was like "what?" but she just veganizes them all.
it's all lonely in this comment box!
Hiya - Stagflation is on the road.
I was going to make the French onion soup from La Dolce Vegan if nobody posted, but time's getting away from me again. It's a beautiful "summer" day here in Toronto, too nice to be inside for long. 13C/55F degrees!
I am back now.
Soup sounds good. Maybe it could be an "everybody make a type of soup" thing? I was thinking I'd like something in the black bean vein....
hip hip hooray! a weekend of no recipe and not discussing it in the comments box with you was no fun!
ok. so a kind of "do your own thing involving soup" week? i'm game. should someone make a post about it???
you want to? i say go for it.
oops...i missed that!
"i tried to look up gwern's chicken and bisuits link and it said it wasn't available ???) did you write out a veganized version when you did it last year or was it by eye?"
michelle, i don't know why it doesn't show up! i did in fact, write up the veganized version last year.
if anyone wants it, lemme know and i'll email it to ya. :) wait, i'll go post it on my blog. yeah.
thanks! i'll look for it!
yah, i don't know. i'd try again, but now that i know i'm gonna get the veganized version, i don't care about that one!
all right, it's there. :) i found the recipe i wrote out last year and it's slightly different so i modified the original (ina garten) recipe, substituting where necessary.
this version is the one i made the other day and everyone gobbled it up!
